Presbyopia
What is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on close-up objects, such as reading material or smartphones. It occurs when the lens inside the eye loses its flexibility, making it difficult to change shape and focus on nearby objects. This natural ageing process affects everyone, even those who have never had vision problems before.
Symptoms of Presbyopia
Presbyopia typically develops gradually, usually becoming noticeable in your early to mid-40s. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty reading small print or seeing close objects clearly
- Need to hold reading materials at arm’s length to focus properly
- Eye strain or headaches when doing close-up work
- Squinting or closing one eye to read or see better
- Improved near vision in brighter lighting
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre. We can properly diagnose your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment options for your specific needs.
What are the Causes of Presbyopia?
//= $blockText; ?>Presbyopia is a common age-related eye condition that causes difficulty focusing on close-up objects. It is caused by the natural ageing process of the eye.
The main factor contributing to presbyopia is the loss of lens flexibility. As we age, the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible and less able to change shape to focus on close-up objects.
Another factor is the weakening of the eye muscles that control the lens. These muscles can also weaken with age, further contributing to focusing difficulties.
Presbyopia is not caused by other common eye conditions, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism. However, these refractive errors can coexist with presbyopia and may require separate correction.
