Open Angle Glaucoma

What is Open-Angle Glaucoma?

Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage channels in the eye become gradually clogged over time, causing an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP).

The term “open-angle” refers to the angle where the iris meets the cornea, which appears open and wide in this type of glaucoma. As the pressure inside the eye increases, it can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss.

Open-angle glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it progresses slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms until significant damage has already occurred.

Symptoms of Open-Angle Glaucoma

There may be no noticeable symptoms in the early stages of open-angle glaucoma. As the condition progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Tunnel vision in advanced stages
  • Blind spots in the visual field
  • Difficulty adjusting to low-light environments
  • Halos around lights
  • Eye pain or redness (less common in open-angle glaucoma)

If you experience any changes in your vision or have a family history of glaucoma, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.

What are the Causes of Open-Angle Glaucoma?

Age is a significant factor, with the risk increasing after the age of 60. Family history also plays a role, and having a family member with glaucoma significantly increases an individual’s risk.

High intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the pressure inside the eye, is a major risk factor for developing open-angle glaucoma. Consistently elevated IOP can damage the optic nerve over time.

Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, may increase the risk of glaucoma. Previous eye injuries or surgeries can also increase the likelihood of developing open-angle glaucoma.
