Ocular Hypertension (OHT)
What is Ocular Hypertension?
Ocular hypertension occurs when the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP) is consistently higher than normal.
A healthy eye maintains a steady IOP through a balance between the production and drainage of aqueous humour, the clear fluid that fills the front part of the eye.
When this balance is disrupted, and the eye produces too much fluid or the drainage system becomes blocked, IOP can increase.
Not everyone with elevated IOP develops glaucoma, and some people with normal IOP may still develop the disease.

Symptoms of Ocular Hypertension
If left untreated, ocular hypertension can lead to glaucoma, which may cause symptoms such as:
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision
- Severe eye pain
- Headaches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Halos around lights
- Redness in the eye
At The Sight Centre, our skilled optometrists and ophthalmologists use advanced diagnostic equipment to accurately measure your IOP and assess your risk of developing glaucoma.

What are the Causes of Ocular Hypertension?
//= $blockText; ?>Several factors can contribute to the development of ocular hypertension, although the exact cause is not always clear.
Age is a significant risk factor, with the risk of ocular hypertension increasing after the age of 40.
Family history is another important factor. Having a family member with ocular hypertension or glaucoma increases an individual’s risk.
Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, can increase intraocular pressure (IOP). Other eye conditions, including eye injuries, inflammation, or certain eye surgeries, can also lead to increased IOP.
BOOK APPOINTMENTManagement and Treatment Options
At The Sight Centre, we offer various management options for ocular hypertension tailored to the specific needs and risk factors of each patient.

Minimally-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
This surgical procedure results in fewer complications and faster recovery times than traditional glaucoma surgeries.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
This laser procedure which is quick and painless is often used to lower the pressure of the eye in the first instance. It works by stimulating the drainage channels in the eye to drain better. The effect often lasts more than 5 years and can be safely repeated.
