Myopic Maculopathy
What is Myopic Maculopathy?
Myopic maculopathy is a complication of high myopia, which occurs when the eyeball is longer than normal.
As the eye elongates, it stretches and thins the retina, particularly the macula. This stretching can cause various changes in the macula.
Atrophy, or the thinning and wasting away of tissue, can occur. Cracks or breaks in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) may also develop.
In some cases, abnormal blood vessel growth, known as choroidal neovascularisation, can occur. Scar tissue formation is another potential consequence of the stretching and thinning of the retina.
These changes can lead to vision loss and other symptoms associated with myopic maculopathy.

Symptoms of Myopic Maculopathy
The symptoms of myopic maculopathy can vary depending on the severity and type of macular changes present. Common symptoms include:
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Difficulty reading or seeing fine details
- Straight lines appearing wavy or crooked
- Blind spots or dark patches in the central vision
- Reduced color perception
- Increased sensitivity to glare
If you have high myopia and experience any changes in your vision, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.

What are the Causes of Myopic Maculopathy?
//= $blockText; ?>The primary cause of myopic maculopathy is high myopia, which is usually defined as a refractive error of -6.00 diopters or more. As the eye grows longer, it stretches and thins the retina, making it more susceptible to damage.
Older age and a family history of myopic maculopathy can increase your risk of developing this condition.
