Macular Hole
What is a Macular Hole?
A macular hole is a small, circular gap that develops in the macula, the part of the retina that allows you to see fine details and colours clearly. The hole can be partial or full-thickness, depending on the extent of the damage to the retinal tissue. Macular holes can develop in one or both eyes and are most common in people over 60 years old.
Symptoms of Macular Hole
The symptoms of a macular hole can vary depending on the stage and severity of the condition. Common symptoms include:
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or bent
- Difficulty reading or seeing fine details
- A dark or blind spot in the centre of the vision
- Reduced colour perception
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.
What are the Causes of Macular Hole?
//= $blockText; ?>Age-related changes are a common factor, as the vitreous gel in the eye can shrink and pull away from the retina, causing a macular hole. Eye injuries and trauma can also lead to macular hole formation.
Retinal detachment is another potential cause, as a macular hole can form as a result of this condition. People with severe nearsightedness, known as high myopia, are at a higher risk of developing macular holes.
Certain eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular pucker, can increase the risk of macular hole formation.
