Macular Degeneration
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration occurs when the macula gradually breaks down, causing vision loss in the central part of the visual field.
There are two main types of macular degeneration: Dry macular degeneration is the more common form, accounting for about 80-90% of cases. It occurs when the macula gradually becomes thinner and less responsive, leading to a gradual decline in central vision.
Wet macular degeneration is less common but often more severe, occurring when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid vision loss.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
The symptoms of macular degeneration can develop gradually and may not be noticeable in the early stages. Common symptoms include:
- Blurred or fuzzy central vision
- Difficulty reading or performing tasks that require fine detail
- Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
- Reduced intensity or brightness of colours
- Increased sensitivity to glare
- Difficulty adapting to low-light environments
- A blind spot or dark spot in the central vision (in advanced cases)
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre. We can properly diagnose your condition and recommend the most suitable management and treatment options for your specific case.

What are the Causes of Macular Degeneration?
Age, genetics, smoking, obesity, inactivity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in saturated fats are risk factors for developing macular degeneration, which is most common in people over 50.
Having a family history of macular degeneration can increase the risk, and smokers are at double the risk of developing the condition.
