Keratoconus
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory eye condition that occurs when the cornea becomes thinner and more cone-shaped over time. A healthy cornea is round and evenly curved, allowing light to focus clearly on the retina.
In keratoconus, the weakened corneal structure causes it to bulge outward, resulting in an irregular, cone-like shape. This irregular shape affects the eye’s ability to focus light properly, leading to vision distortions, blurriness, and other symptoms.

Symptoms of Keratoconus
The symptoms of keratoconus can vary depending on the severity and progression of the condition. Common symptoms include:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Increased sensitivity to light and glare
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions
- Halos around lights
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Eye strain and headaches
- Sudden worsening or clouding of vision
If you or your child experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.

What are the Causes of Keratoconus?
Genetics play a role, as keratoconus tends to run in families. Chronic, vigorous eye rubbing has been associated with the development and progression of keratoconus.
Allergic conditions like hay fever, eczema, and asthma have been linked to a higher risk of keratoconus.
Certain connective tissue disorders, such as Down syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, are also associated with an increased risk of keratoconus.
