Keraring Surgery

Keraring Surgery

Keraring Surgery at The Sight Centre offers an innovative solution for those struggling with keratoconus and other corneal ectatic disorders.

This advanced procedure can help improve your vision and potentially delay or avoid the need for corneal transplantation.

Kerarings are small, clear, crescent-shaped implants that are inserted into the cornea to flatten its cone-like bulge and improve its overall shape. By reshaping the cornea, we can reduce visual distortions and improve your focusing ability, leading to clearer, sharper vision.

What is Keraring Surgery?

Keraring Surgery involves the implantation of small, semicircular rings into the cornea to improve its shape and focusing ability. These implants, made of a biocompatible material, are designed to flatten the cone-like bulge characteristic of keratoconus and other corneal ectatic disorders.

The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 30 minutes per eye. Using advanced femtosecond laser technology, your surgeon creates a small channel within the cornea where the Keraring is inserted.

The number and position of the implants are customised based on your specific corneal shape and refractive error.

Keraring Surgery is often combined with corneal collagen cross-linking to both reshape the cornea and strengthen it against further progression of keratoconus.

Your Treatment Journey

At The Sight Centre, we understand that any eye procedure can be concerning. That’s why our team of expert ophthalmologists is dedicated to guiding you through every step of the Keraring Surgery process and ensuring your comfort and safety.

Preparation and Anesthesia

Before your procedure, we’ll administer local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort. Your eye will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for surgery.

Surgical Procedure

Using advanced femtosecond laser technology, your surgeon will create a small channel in your cornea. The Keraring implants will then be carefully inserted into this channel. The number and position of the implants will be customised based on your specific needs.

Post-Operative Care

Immediately after your surgery, we’ll provide detailed post-operative care instructions. These may include using prescribed eye drops, wearing a protective eye shield, and avoiding rubbing your eye. Most patients can go home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you.

Keraring Surgery FAQs

How long does it take to recover from Keraring Surgery?

Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days. However, your vision may continue to improve over several weeks to months as your eye adjusts to the implants.

Is Keraring Surgery painful?

The procedure itself is painless due to local anaesthesia. You may experience some mild discomfort, light sensitivity, or a feeling of having something in your eye for a few days after surgery, but this is typically easily managed with eye drops.

Will I still need to wear glasses or contact lenses after Keraring Surgery?

While Keraring Surgery can significantly improve vision, some patients may still need glasses or contact lenses for optimal vision. However, many find their prescription is much less strong after the procedure.

Can Kerarings be removed if necessary?

Yes, one of the advantages of Keraring Surgery is that it’s reversible. If needed, the implants can be removed or replaced.

How long do Kerarings last?

Kerarings are designed to be permanent implants. However, in rare cases where adjustment is needed, they can be safely removed or replaced.
