Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

What is Hyperopia?

Hyperopia is a refractive error that occurs when the eye is shorter than normal or the cornea is too flat. This causes light rays to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it, resulting in difficulty seeing nearby objects clearly, while distant objects may appear more in focus.

In mild cases of hyperopia, the eye’s focusing ability (accommodation) can compensate for the refractive error, allowing individuals to see clearly at all distances. However, as the condition progresses or the eye’s focusing ability weakens with age, vision problems may become more apparent.

Symptoms of Hyperopia

The symptoms of hyperopia can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the individual’s age. Common symptoms include:

  • Blurred or fuzzy vision, especially when looking at nearby objects
  • Squinting or straining the eyes to see clearly
  • Eye fatigue or discomfort after reading or doing close-up work
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty focusing on close-up tasks
  • Aching or burning sensation around the eyes
  • Crossed eyes (strabismus)
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Difficulty with reading and learning

If you or your child experience any of these symptoms, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.

What are the Causes of Hyperopia?

Hyperopia is primarily caused by structural factors in the eye, such as a shorter than average eyeball length, a flatter than normal cornea, or a weaker than normal focusing power of the lens. In most cases, hyperopia is a hereditary condition, meaning that if one or both parents have hyperopia, their children are more likely to develop the condition as well.
