Eyelid Laxity
What is Eyelid Laxity?
Eyelid laxity is a condition characterised by the weakening or stretching of the eyelid tissues, leading to drooping or sagging of the eyelids. This can affect the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. In some cases, the sagging skin may fold over the eyelashes or even cover part of the eye, causing vision impairment.

Symptoms of Eyelid Laxity
The main symptoms of eyelid laxity include:
- Drooping or sagging of the upper or lower eyelids
- Excess skin on the eyelids
- Eyelid folds that cover the eyelashes or part of the eye
- A tired, aged, or hooded appearance of the eyes
- Difficulty keeping the eyes open
- Irritation or discomfort due to excess skin rubbing against the eye
- Vision impairment, particularly in the upper field of vision
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre. We can properly assess your eyelid health and recommend the most suitable management and treatment options for your specific case.

What are the Causes of Eyelid Laxity?
Eyelid laxity can be caused by several factors, including the natural ageing process, genetics, nerve damage or muscle weakness, previous eye surgeries or injuries, and certain eye conditions.
As we age, the skin and muscles around the eyelids lose elasticity and strength, which can lead to drooping or sagging. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing eyelid laxity, while others may experience it due to conditions that affect the nerves or muscles controlling the eyelids, such as myasthenia gravis or Bell’s palsy.
Previous eyelid surgeries or trauma to the eye area can also weaken the eyelid tissues and contribute to laxity. In some cases, eye conditions like eyelid tumours or chronic eye rubbing can cause eyelid laxity to develop.
