What are Eye Flashes?
Eye flashes are bright spots or streaks of light that appear suddenly in your field of vision. Unlike floaters, which appear to drift, flashes tend to flicker or shimmer. They can occur in one or both eyes and may be more noticeable in dark environments.
Symptoms of Eye Flashes
The symptoms of eye flashes can vary, but common experiences include:
- Sudden appearance of bright lights or streaks in your vision
- Flashing or flickering lights that last for a few seconds
- Jagged lines or “heat waves” in your visual field
- Flashes that are more noticeable in dark or dimly lit environments
- Flashes accompanied by new or increased floaters
- A dark shadow or curtain effect in your peripheral vision (in severe cases)

What are the Causes of Eye Flashes?
Eye flashes are typically caused by physical changes within the eye. The most common cause is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), where the vitreous gel inside the eye begins to separate from the retina. Other potential causes include retinal tears or detachment, migraine auras, eye trauma, and certain medications. In rare cases, flashes may be associated with eye tumours or neurological conditions.
