Epiretinal Membrane
What is an epiretinal membrane?
An epiretinal membrane is a thin, semi-translucent layer of scar tissue that forms on the surface of the retina, particularly over the macula. As the membrane contracts, it can cause the retina to pucker or wrinkle, leading to distorted or blurred central vision. Epiretinal membranes can affect one or both eyes and are most common in people over 50 years old.

Symptoms of epiretinal membrane
There may be no noticeable symptoms in the early stages of epiretinal membrane formation. As the condition progresses, symptoms may include:
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or crooked
- Difficulty reading or performing tasks that require fine detail
- Grey or cloudy area in the central vision
- Increased sensitivity to glare
- Double vision (in rare cases)
It’s important to note that symptoms may vary from person to person and can develop gradually over time. If you experience any changes in your vision, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre.

What are the causes of epiretinal membrane?
//= $blockText; ?>Epiretinal membranes often develop without a clear cause, a condition known as idiopathic epiretinal membrane. However, several factors may contribute to the formation of these membranes.
One such factor is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), where the separation of the vitreous gel from the retina can cause microscopic damage, potentially leading to epiretinal membrane development.
Retinal tears or detachment can also result in the formation of epiretinal membranes as part of the healing process.
Certain eye surgeries, such as cataract surgery or retinal detachment repair, may increase the risk of developing epiretinal membranes.
In some cases, advanced diabetic retinopathy can contribute to the formation of these membranes. Chronic eye inflammation, such as uveitis, is another potential risk factor for epiretinal membrane development.
