Ectropion
What is Ectropion?
Ectropion is an eyelid disorder in which the lower eyelid turns outward, away from the eye surface. This condition can affect one or both eyes and is more common in older adults. When the eyelid turns outward, the tear ducts become exposed, leading to excessive tearing, irritation, and an increased risk of eye infections.
Symptoms of Ectropion
The symptoms of ectropion can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but common signs include:
- Outwardly turned lower eyelid
- Redness and irritation of the exposed inner eyelid
- Excessive tearing (epiphora)
- Dry, gritty, or burning sensation in the eye
- Sensitivity to light and wind
- Mucus discharge or crusting around the eye
- Recurring eye infections
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre. We can properly diagnose your condition and recommend the most suitable management and treatment options for your specific case.
What are the Causes of Ectropion?
//= $blockText; ?>Ectropion can be caused by various factors, including age-related changes, where the tissues and muscles around the eyelids become weak or stretched.
These include facial paralysis from conditions such as Bell’s palsy or stroke; scarring from previous eyelid surgery, injury, or skin cancer; eyelid tumours.
Some babies are born with the condition due to improper development of the eyelid muscles.
