DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty)
DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty)
DMEK surgery at The Sight Centre offers a revolutionary solution for those suffering from corneal endothelial disorders. This advanced partial corneal transplant technique can significantly improve vision while preserving most of your own corneal tissue.
By selectively replacing only the innermost layer of the cornea, we can restore clarity and function to eyes affected by conditions like Fuchs’ dystrophy and bullous keratopathy.
Our experienced team of consultant ophthalmologists combines surgical expertise with cutting-edge technology to deliver this sight-saving procedure safely and effectively.
Benefits of DMEK
- Replaces only the diseased inner corneal layer
- Faster and more complete visual recovery compared to other transplant techniques
- Lower risk of rejection
- Minimal change to the eye’s structure
- Suitable for various endothelial disorders
- Potential for better long-term outcomes
What is DMEK?
//= $blockText; ?>DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) is a highly specialised form of corneal transplant surgery that replaces only the innermost layer of the cornea – the endothelium and its basement membrane (Descemet’s membrane).
The procedure involves carefully removing the damaged endothelial layer and replacing it with a thin disc of donor tissue comprising healthy endothelial cells and Descemet’s membrane.
This ultra-thin graft is then carefully positioned and secured in place, where it adheres naturally to the back of the patient’s cornea.
DMEK is typically performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 30-60 minutes to complete.
BOOK APPOINTMENTWhy Choose DMEK?
Discover the vision-restoring benefits of DMEK. This advanced corneal transplant technique can help improve your vision while minimising surgical impact on your eye.
Selective Tissue Replacement
DMEK replaces only the diseased endothelial layer, preserving the rest of your healthy corneal tissue.
Rapid Visual Recovery
Many patients experience faster and more complete visual recovery with DMEK compared to other transplant techniques.
Reduced Rejection Risk
The minimal amount of transplanted tissue leads to a lower risk of graft rejection.
Natural Corneal Shape Preservation
DMEK maintains the natural shape of your cornea, potentially resulting in better optical quality.
Suitable for Various Conditions
DMEK is an excellent option for endothelial disorders like Fuchs’ dystrophy and bullous keratopathy.
Minimally Invasive
The procedure requires only a small incision, leading to faster healing and reduced surgical risks.
Potential for Better Outcomes
Studies suggest DMEK may offer better long-term outcomes compared to other endothelial keratoplasty techniques.
Your Treatment Journey
At The Sight Centre, we understand that any eye surgery can be daunting. That’s why our team of expert ophthalmologists is dedicated to guiding you through every step of the DMEK process and ensuring your comfort and safety.
Preparation and Anesthesia
//= $blockText; ?>Before your surgery, we’ll administer local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Your eye will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for surgery.
Surgical Procedure
//= $blockText; ?>Your surgeon will make a small incision in your cornea to carefully remove the damaged endothelial layer. The ultra-thin donor tissue is then delicately inserted and positioned. An air bubble is injected to help the graft adhere to your cornea.
Post-Operative Care
//= $blockText; ?>Immediately after your surgery, we’ll provide detailed post-operative care instructions. These may include maintaining a specific head position for the first day or two, using prescribed eye drops, and attending regular follow-up appointments. Most patients can go home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you.
DMEK FAQs
How long does it take to recover from DMEK?
Initial recovery takes about 1-2 weeks, but vision continues to improve over several months. Many patients see significant improvement within the first month.
Will I need to use anti-rejection medication after DMEK?
Yes, you’ll need to use steroid eye drops to prevent rejection, typically for several months. Your ophthalmologist will provide a detailed medication plan.
How does DMEK compare to other corneal transplant techniques?
DMEK often provides faster visual recovery and better visual outcomes compared to other techniques. It also has a lower rejection risk due to the minimal amount of transplanted tissue.
Will I need glasses or contact lenses after DMEK?
Many patients still require glasses or contact lenses after DMEK to achieve their best vision, particularly for reading. Your prescription may change as your eye heals.
What are the risks associated with DMEK?
While generally safe, risks can include graft dislocation, primary graft failure, and rejection. Your surgeon will discuss all potential risks with you during your consultation.
How soon can I return to work after DMEK?
Most patients can return to office-based work within 1-2 weeks, but this can vary. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines based on your individual case and healing progress.
