What are Eyelid Cysts
and Bumps?
Eyelid cysts and bumps are lumps or swellings that develop on or under the eyelid. Various factors, including blocked oil glands, inflammation, or infections, can cause them.
The most common types of eyelid cysts and bumps include chalazia, which are painless, firm bumps caused by clogged and inflamed oil glands; styes (hordeola), which are painful, red bumps resulting from bacterial infection of oil glands or eyelash follicles; seborrheic keratoses, which are non-cancerous, waxy, or scaly growths that develop on the eyelids due to ageing or sun exposure; and xanthelasma, which are yellowish, flat, or slightly raised patches formed under the skin by the accumulation of cholesterol deposits.
Symptoms of Eyelid Cysts and Bumps
The symptoms of eyelid cysts and bumps can vary depending on the type and cause of the lump. Common symptoms include:
- A visible lump or swelling on or under the eyelid
- Redness and inflammation around the affected area
- Pain or tenderness (more common with styes)
