Blepharitis
What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the eyelids, particularly the areas where the eyelashes grow. It can involve the outer edge of the eyelid (anterior blepharitis) or the inner edge that comes in contact with the eye (posterior blepharitis). Blepharitis can cause discomfort, irritation, and unsightly reddening of the eyelids.
Symptoms of Blepharitis
The symptoms of blepharitis can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Common symptoms include:
- Red, swollen, or irritated eyelids
- Itching or burning sensation in the eyes
- Watery eyes
- Dry eyes
- Crusty debris or flakes at the base of the eyelashes
- Greasy or oily eyelids
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision
- Eyelashes that grow abnormally or fall out
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with the knowledgeable team at The Sight Centre. We can properly diagnose blepharitis and recommend the most suitable treatment options for your specific case.
What are the Causes of Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is usually caused by staphylococcal bacteria, which are commonly found on the skin. They can cause blepharitis when they overgrow and infect the eyelids.
Other causes include seborrheic dermatitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), allergies and rosacea. Certain medications can also contribute to the development of blepharitis.
